Edukators

July 30, 2006

Watched the German film The Edukators in the weekend.  It seemed a bit slow in places, but has good complications and lots of engaging conflict between the characters.  Very clever ending too.

Rockstar

July 27, 2006

I watched Rockstar Supernova last night.  I don’t know what to make of it really – usually I don’t like reality programmes a bit, and stuff like Survivor leaves me cold, but I got hooked into Rockstar INXS last year – I think I liked the music, for one, and the fact that there was a real outcome (joining a real band) rather than something contrived (like winning money).  But Supernova seems like a contrived band – would Gilby, Tommy and Jason have got together without Mark Burnett’s $$$?  Still, some of the competitors are genuinely talented.

Mobile

July 26, 2006

I spent the afternoon on the Mobile Library yesterday – I do once a month there.  It’s very challenging and out of my comfort zone.  I admire Rob for doing it every day.

I listened to Back Against The Wall – a “covers” album of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, put together by a lot of “famous in the 70s” musicians – lots of whom were in other Prog rock bands like ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, etc.  It’s nice enough, but it’s too much like a re-recording, rather than anything new.  The highlight for me was Ian Anderson’s flute solo on ‘Is there anybody out there’.

Coma Virus

July 25, 2006

I’ve been listening to the album Hidden, by Coma Virus.  It’s a very moody and deep ambient soundscape – no real melodies or beats, just a swirling changing air.  Coma Virus is a solo project by Paul Haslinger, from the German 70s electronic act Tangerine Dream.

Fountains of Wayne

July 24, 2006

I got hold of a copy of FoW’s earlier album Utopia Parkway – a nice enough listen, but a bit lighter than Welcome Interstate Managers, and without any really great songs.

There is lots of new classical music coming through at the moment so some of the older stuff will be going to make way for that.

The start

July 23, 2006

So this is my first blog for S&V.  Still experimenting with it, but we’ll see how it goes.  Saw the movie Tsotsi in the weekend – pretty good stuff.  We’ll get the DVD for the library when it comes out.  The music was pretty great so we’ll see if we can track down the soundtrack to add to the collection.

Listening to Fountains of Wayne – fun, indie, guitar rock.
